ReSight·it › Leaving Wix
How to leave Wix and keep your domain and email
Many small businesses pay Wix every month for a simple site they rarely change. You can move without losing your web address, your email or your place on Google. Here's how it works.
The move, step by step
- Rebuild the site somewhere else first. Your Wix site stays online the whole time. The new site is built and checked on a private preview address.
- Note what Wix was doing for you. Contact forms, booking, tracking codes (Google Analytics, Google Ads, Tag Manager) and any page addresses. Wix forms stop working when you leave, so they need a replacement.
- Keep your email exactly as it is. If your email runs on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, it depends on a few DNS records (MX records). Those are copied across unchanged, so mail keeps arriving.
- Point your domain to the new site. If your domain was bought through Wix, it can stay registered there: you only change where it points (its nameservers or DNS records). Your domain stays in your name.
- Check everything, then cancel the Wix plan. Only after the new site, the forms and your email are tested and working. Cancel the website plan, not the domain, unless you moved the domain too.
What stays the same
- Your web address, for example yourbusiness.com
- Your email address and inbox
- Your Google ranking, as long as page addresses are kept or redirected
- Your Google Business Profile and Google Ads account
What changes
- Wix's built-in forms, booking and store stop working and need a replacement
- The Wix editor: changes are made another way
- Your monthly bill, which is usually lower
Questions
Will my website go down when I leave Wix?
Your Wix site stays online until the new one is ready. On the day you switch, there can be a short gap, usually under an hour, while the change spreads across the internet.
Do I have to move my domain away from Wix?
No. A domain bought through Wix can stay registered with Wix. You only change where it points. Moving it to another registrar is optional.
Will I lose my place on Google?
Not if the same web address is kept and every old page address either stays the same or gets a permanent (301) redirect to its new address.
What happens to my Wix contact form?
It stops working when you leave. It needs to be replaced with a form that sends messages to your inbox, or with a WhatsApp or email button.
