ReSight·it › Leaving Squarespace
How to leave Squarespace and keep your domain and email
Squarespace is easy to start with, but the monthly plan adds up for a simple business site. You can move without losing your web address, your email or your place on Google.
The move, step by step
- Rebuild the site first, keeping it private. Your Squarespace site stays live while the new one is built and checked on a preview address.
- List what Squarespace handles for you. Forms, scheduling, any shop, tracking codes and your page addresses. Squarespace forms stop working when you leave.
- Protect your email. Email on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 depends on DNS records (MX records). Those stay exactly as they are.
- Point your domain to the new site. A domain bought through Squarespace can stay registered there; you only change its DNS records. It stays in your name.
- Test, then cancel the website plan. Cancel only after the new site, the forms and your email all work. Keep the domain registration unless you moved it.
What stays the same
- Your web address
- Your email address and inbox
- Your Google ranking, with page addresses kept or redirected
- Your Google Business Profile and ads
What changes
- Squarespace forms, scheduling and store need a replacement
- The Squarespace editor
- Your monthly bill, which is usually lower
Questions
Can I export my Squarespace site?
Squarespace's own export is limited, so a site is normally rebuilt rather than exported. It can be rebuilt to look exactly the same, or redesigned.
Do I have to move my domain away from Squarespace?
No. You can leave the domain registered with Squarespace and only change where it points.
Will my email stop working?
No, as long as the email (MX) records are kept unchanged when the domain is pointed to the new site, and checked after the switch.
Will I lose my place on Google?
Not if the same domain is kept and old page addresses stay the same or are redirected to the new ones.
